Completion of Installation by Danny Sharp

In the final week of making our installation and the final changes to our project we had a class visit to the Rotunda to demonstrate the game in action. Here was the last chance to showcase our project to the class and the guests from the Rotunda museum. When showing our installation we got positive feedback apart from the audio, which was yet to be finished. Little chances have been changed this week on the visuals including the timer instead of the max/msp timer to link the timer in I decided to use a sand/hour glass timer. This was to give the user more relaxation, so they wouldn't worry about the time going down. Another change I made to the installation was that whilst the game is loading there is a loading screen so the user will not be clicking on the screen not knowing what to do. This week we will be making final changes to the patch, audio and visuals so that it will be ready to hand-in for the exhibition.
These are the timers which have used instead of the max/msp timer.

This is the loading screen for the installation.

Update Saturday 6th November by Danny Sharp

Coming closer to the day of the exhibition I have been putting the finishing touches to the visuals for the installation. On monday our group had to present a demonstration of the installation to the other groups and our visitors. The visitors then gave us feedback on our project, which was mostly positive. On the visuals they commented on the text and how it wasn't as clear as it could have been throughout the installation and so to improve it i would need to change this. Also they commented on how it wasn't very clear how to play the game so I have created an instruction video to make it easier for the user to know how to play the game. For the project I have made been making videos to entice potential users to the installation and to learn more about the charms of our exhibition. During the week I have been working on the book (prepare the crew) section of the installation and I have been finalising the layouts. As a group we recorded a video to use as the book page turning, which I then had to edit to make the final product. When making this I encountered timing problems for the pages to work as i wanted them too, but with the time I put in I was able to achieved the desired transaction of the page turnings.

Audio Update - Andy Ayres

With the sea shanty song now recorded for the introduction page finished at home, i think it would be best if I record a final version at university as the quality isn't as best as it could be. Although I am happy with the overall writing of the little jingle.

As well listening to the feedback on the audio from Rob and Mark I think I will have to recorded most of the audio again as some takes to long to kick in, plus volume/timing/relevance issues also apply. As well to record it all at the studio instead of at home will be best in the long run.

Making the Game (VISUALS) By Danny Sharp

Hello,

I have been busy working on the visuals for our project working closely with Tadej to achieve a desired look to the layout of the interactive installation. As all of the installations were about charms of the sea, we were given a sub-group Protection Charms to let the user learn and interact to gain a better understanding of the charms.

To enable the user to learn about the charms we had the idea to split the installation into two parts.

The first part would consist of an idea of creating a book where the user would be able to flick through the pages gathering the relevant information for the charms we have researched for our project. This would then let the users know all the information they would need to know about the charms and therefore gaining an understanding of the aim of the installation.

The second part of the installation would be where the user would be able to test the knowledge of the charms that they have gathered when reading the book in the previous part. For this part we are using the idea of the user being the captain on the ship, where the mission is to collect different types of fish. Whilst collecting the fish you will then encounter dangers which will need to be passed by using the charms of protection to save the crew from these dangers.

Visually, there have been many changes to the layout and style of the game as i have developed the look of the game from being plain and not having much relevance to the game to a better more professional look to all the parts of the game and menus.

Here are some screenshots of the designs i have been working on for the game.

This first picture is showing the layout of the whole screen which will the have the ship and the sea overlaid as you explore and uncover the map.

Here is a picture of a screen which will popup whilst playing the game and it will have questions and answers which you must answer to save the crew. All these pages will have images which can be click to reveal if the answers are wrong or right.

I have also started creating some screens for the win and lose screens for if you manage/fail to answer the questions in the time.

This is working progress so all the designs and layouts will be changed for the finishing installation.

Thanks for reading. Danny Sharp
